Embracing the New Year: Building a Lifelong Habit of Daily Bible Reading
Happy New Year, friends! As we step into 2026, I can’t help but reflect on the fresh start that a new year brings. It’s a time when many of us make resolutions, whether it’s hitting the gym more often, eating healthier, or finally tackling that home project we’ve been putting off. But as followers of Christ, what if our top priority this year was something far more transformative: committing to a daily habit of reading God’s Word?
I’m going to share a personal milestone with you, I just completed my 20th time reading through the entire Bible! It has been an incredible journey of growth, revelation, and deeper fellowship with the Lord. And let me encourage you: you can do it too! The Bible isn’t just a book, it’s the living, breathing voice of God speaking directly into our lives. In Hebrews 4:12, we’re reminded that “the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.” Yet, in the busyness of life, it’s easy to let Bible reading become just another item on our to-do list, something we check off to feel accomplished. But that’s not what God intends. Daily Bible reading is so much more than checking a box, it’s an invitation to spend time with the Lord, to listen to His guidance, and to draw from the endless well of wisdom He offers for every aspect of our lives.

As we turn the page on another year, think about the challenges and opportunities ahead. Maybe you’re facing decisions at work, navigating family dynamics, or seeking direction in your faith journey. The world bombards us with advice from every angle, social media, podcasts, self-help books, but where do we find true, unchanging wisdom? Right in the pages of Scripture. Proverbs 2:6 tells us, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” God’s Word is packed with practical insights for relationships, finances, emotions, and everything in between. It’s not outdated, but it’s timeless and relevant to our modern lives.
I can tell you that each time through the Word of God I have found reveals new depths. Layers of truth unfold, connections between Old and New Testaments become clearer, and God’s character shines brighter. It’s never repetitive, it’s alive! But here’s the key: approaching the Bible daily isn’t about quantity, it’s about quality. It’s not a race to finish a reading plan in record time. Instead, it’s carving out that sacred space to commune with God.
Imagine starting your day not with the noise of notifications, but with the quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit through verses like Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” When we read with an open heart, we’re not just absorbing information; we’re allowing God to shape us, convict us, and lead us.

## Making It More Than a Checklist: Practical Tips for Meaningful Bible Time
If you’re like me, you’ve probably started strong with a Bible reading plan in January, only to fizzle out by February. So how do we build a habit that sticks and goes deeper—one that leads to multiple full read-throughs over the years? Here are a few practical steps rooted in Scripture:
1. **Set a Specific Time and Place**: Treat your Bible time like an unmissable appointment with the King of Kings. Maybe it’s first thing in the morning with your coffee, or in the evening as you wind down. Consistency builds the habit, and as Jesus modeled in Mark 1:35, rising early to pray and seek the Father sets a powerful tone for the day.
2. **Start Small and Build Up**: Don’t overwhelm yourself with reading the entire Bible in a month. Begin with a chapter or even a few verses from the Gospels or Psalms. Use a structured plan to guide you through the whole Bible over a year or more. The goal is depth, not speed—meditate on what you read, asking, “Lord, what are You saying to me today?” Over time, this builds momentum for complete read-throughs.
3. **Listen Actively to God’s Voice**: Reading isn’t passive. Pray before you start: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears” (1 Samuel 3:9). Journal your thoughts, note how the verses apply to your life, and listen for the Holy Spirit’s prompting. This turns reading into a conversation, where God guides your steps, offers comfort in trials, or corrects your path.
4. **Involve Community**: Share what you’re learning! Join a Bible study group here at Calvary Chapel Fergus Falls, or discuss passages with your family. Accountability helps, and as Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”
Remember, the enemy will try to distract you—busyness, doubts, or even boredom. But press on! The rewards are eternal: a closer walk with Jesus, wisdom for daily decisions, and a heart aligned with God’s will. If I can make it through 20 times, trusting in God’s grace each step, so can you!
## A Prayer for Your New Year Journey
As we embark on this new year together, let’s commit to making daily Bible reading a priority. Father God, thank You for Your Word, which is a treasure trove of wisdom and life. Help us not to treat it as a duty but as delightful time spent with You. Open our ears to hear Your voice, guide our lives through Your truth, and transform us from the inside out. Empower us to read through Your Word again and again, growing deeper in love with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I’d love to hear from you—how are you planning to engage with the Bible this year? Have you read through it before, or is this your first time aiming for it? Drop a comment below or join us at Calvary Chapel Fergus Falls for our upcoming series on spiritual disciplines. Let’s make 2026 a year of growth in God’s Word!
