Walking in the Light: A Warning Against Division in the Body of Christ

By Tim

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Many of us grew up loving the epic story of Star Wars, where the battle between the light side and the dark side of the Force captures something deep in the human soul. Our family tends to watch the films during Christmas week for some reason, and after a year of ups and downs in church ministry I found myself reflecting on the themes this time. The light side stands for peace, harmony, selflessness to help others, and life-giving power. The dark side promises strength and victory, but it is rooted in fear, anger, selfish ambition, and hatred. Those who fall to it become twisted, destructive versions of who they were meant to be, yet even there, redemption remains possible for the one who turns back.

The Scriptures speak of a far greater conflict: the battle between light and darkness in the spiritual realm. Jesus Himself declared, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). As His followers, we are called to “walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8), bearing the fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth.

Yet sometimes, even within the church, within ministry teams, leadership circles, and congregations, we see behaviors that look disturbingly like the dark side. Brothers and sisters who, driven by jealousy, pride, or the desire for position and influence, undermine others behind their backs. They spread rumors, sow discord, betray trust, and justify division, all while wearing the name of Christ. And most tragically of all, when confronted, some refuse to repent, choosing instead to harden their hearts and continue causing harm to the Body.

The Bible is clear and sobering about such things:

– “But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:14-16).

– “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them” (Romans 16:17).

– “Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them” (Titus 3:10).

These are not light words. Division is not a minor offense; it grieves the heart of God and wounds His people deeply.

If you recognize yourself in this description, if you have spoken against a fellow believer, undermined a leader, or pursued your own agenda at the expense of unity, hear the loving voice of your Savior today: Repent.

Turn back to the light. Confess your sin to God and to those you have hurt. Seek reconciliation. There is no offense too great for the blood of Jesus to cover, and no heart too hardened for His grace to soften.

And if you have been wounded by such betrayal, do not let bitterness take root. Forgive as you have been forgiven (Ephesians 4:32). Entrust justice to the Lord, who sees all things. And pray for those who have hurt you, that they might come to repentance and restoration.

The church is meant to be a radiant reflection of Christ’s light in a dark world. Let us commit together to walk in humility, love, and unity, putting others before ourselves, speaking truth in love, and guarding the precious oneness that Jesus prayed for (John 17:21-23).

May we all choose, every day, the true light that leads to life. In the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, Your fellow servant in the gospel.
