Christians and Politics
Some folks might say, “Christians—especially pastors—should keep their noses out of politics.” Well, let me ask you this: why? Why should we stay silent when the gospel calls us to be salt and light in every corner of this world? That includes the public square, the voting booth, and even the halls of power.
You see, the Bible doesn’t tell us to hide our faith under a bushel. No, it says, “Let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16). If we’re not bringing that light into the places where decisions are made, where laws are crafted, and where leaders are chosen, then we’re not fully living out what God’s called us to do.
While Sunday morning should primarily be on teaching from the Bible or hopefully through the Bible, issues of morality will come up and it’s important to exhort from Biblical perspective living out the Gospel. And the gospel isn’t just a Sunday morning thing—it’s an every day, every way thing. And that means we need believers, and more importantly, we need the truth of Jesus, right in the thick of it all.
Let’s be honest: if Christians hadn’t stepped into the political arena way back when, we might not even have a United States of America. This nation was built by men and women of faith who knew that God’s principles don’t stop at the church door—they shape societies, they guide nations, and they change history. And because politics affects people we should be praying and aware because we care.
So, no, I don’t think we should stay out of politics. I think we should be bold, bringing the love, truth, and wisdom of Christ to every part of life—including the public square. That’s our calling, and that’s our privilege. Let’s be a light for Jesus Christ, share the Gospel and live it out!
