A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
"A preacher must be both soldier and shepherd. He must nourish, teach, and defend; he must have teeth in his mouth and be able to bite" - Martin Luther
Fresh on the heels of a reformation that Martin Luther had real no intention of igniting, he was fighting both clergy and lay people on every front.
His primary intent was never to divide the church, only to realign people to the truth of Scripture. Luther was personally, professionally, and spiritually suffering.
It seems likely that in the dark hours of trial and tribulation he found solace in the reminder from Scripture and the opening verse of Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
